| Governor Yvonne Ortega crowns new Lebanese beauty queen |

To commemorate the 67th anniversary of the independence of Lebanon, Merida’s Lebanese expat community crowned a new beauty queen and honored distinguished members of their community in November 2010.
The event was attended by dignitaries, including Governor Yvonne Ortega and Merida’s Mayor Angelica Araujo, who herself is of Lebanese descent. The event took place at the Lebanese Social & Sports Club before 750 guests.
The honored members of the Lebanese community consisted of Antonio Simón Safar, Carlos Humberto Wabi Dogre, Zacarías Auais Cmaid and Melba Rosa Abraham Achach.
In addition, this year’s debutantes were presented to the Lebanese and Lebanese-Yucatecan community: Rebeca Jazmín, Sarita Pinto, Cristina Dájer, Alejandra Zárate, María Fernanda Slemen, Fabiola Vargas, Gabriela Mijangos and Mariana Caballero.
There are approximately 5,500 Lebanese expatriates living in Merida, and an additional 65,000 Lebanese-Yucatecans and Lebanese-Mexicans.
