The Homophobia of "Yucatan Today"

If one published the following, it should not come as a surprise to be accused of being a racist:

“There are some things you should know about black life in Merida… [t]he authorities are very protective of their shopkeepers.  If you consider shoplifting, be sure that you are careful about it.”

If one published the following, it should not come as a surprise to be accused of being an anti-Semite:

“There are some things you should know about Jewish life in Merida… [t]he authorities are very protective of locals’ purchasing power.  If you consider a financial scam, be sure that you are circumspect about it.”

If one published the following, it should not come as a surprise to be accused of being a homophobe:

“There are some things you should know about gay life in Merida… [t]he authorities are very protective of their teens.  If you consider a tryst with a younger person, be sure that person is 18 or older.”

It is racist to presume that blacks are more likely to shoplift than non-blacks.  It is anti-Semitic to believe that Jews are more likely to engage in financial swindles than non-Jews.  It is homophobic to think that homosexuals are more likely to tolerate pedophilia than straights.

Yet, this is the homophobic trash that Jane McCarthy & Bruce Kelley write in Living in Merida, on page 220, in a book published by Yucatan Today!

There it is: “There are some things you should know about gay life in Merida… [t]he authorities are very protective of their teens.  If you consider a tryst with a younger person, be sure that person is 18 or older.”

It is clear that Judy Abbott, Andrea Mier y Teran and Juanita Stein, who are ultimately responsible for what Yucatan Today publishes, endorse this homophobic view of gay and lesbian sexual inclinations.  It is a moral outrage that this kind of homophobic garbage is published at all, and it is an insult to every member of the GLBTQ community that these homophobes, with impunity, advance such hatred against members of the non-heterosexual community.

Stop the hate!

Stop Yucatan Today and its homophobic campaign against gays and lesbians!

Stop the hate!
